Who I Am In Christ Bible Study

Who does God say I am? Do you want to know who you are in Christ?  I know that I have struggled with my identity, not necessarily having an identity crisis, but just sometimes wondering who am I? Why am I here?

When you’re struggling with your identity or when you don’t know who you are in Christ it’s easy to get discouraged and just feel down.  Then, of course, satan comes in and he will do everything that he can to get you to stay in that place.

That’s why you need to know what God has to say about you to overcome any of the thoughts that the enemy will try to get you to meditate on and then believe. You are who God says you are.

If you already know what the Word of God has to say about you when satan tries to attack your mind you already have a weapon ready to use against him which is the Word of God.  You will simply have to quote what the Bible says about you and guess what?  The enemy must go.

David & Goliath Story

Let’s talk about David and Goliath.  I think most of you know the story, but I will do a quick overview for those of you who don’t.

There was a giant named goliath he was over 9 feet tall.  He would taunt the Israelites for 40 days and tell them to send out a man that will fight him.  He said if that man kills him then they will be his slave, but if he kills the man then the Israelites would be his slave.

Everyone was terrified!  He was huge like I said over 9 feet tall, can you imagine being even 6 feet tall he would still tower over you.

David goes down to King Saul’s camp to take some food to his brothers, they were part of the army of Israel.  When David went to bring the food to his brothers, he heard goliath taunting them.  He inquired what the reward would be if someone killed the giant.

David tells king Saul that He would go and fight goliath, so Saul reluctantly agreed. They put armor on him but he was not comfortable with it, so he picked up 5 smooth stones to use with his slingshot.

We will start reading from 1 Samuel 17: 41

1 Samuel 17

41 Goliath walked out toward David with his shield bearer ahead of him, 42 sneering in contempt at this ruddy-faced boy. 43 “Am I a dog,” he roared at David, “that you come at me with a stick?” And he cursed David by the names of his gods. 44 “Come over here, and I’ll give your flesh to the birds and wild animals!” Goliath yelled.

45 David replied to the Philistine, “You come to me with sword, spear, and javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies—the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.

46 Today the Lord will conquer you, and I will kill you and cut off your head. And then I will give the dead bodies of your men to the birds and wild animals, and the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel! 47 And everyone assembled here will know that the Lord rescues his people, but not with sword and spear. This is the Lord’s battle, and he will give you to us!”

48 As Goliath moved closer to attack, David quickly ran out to meet him. 49 Reaching into his shepherd’s bag and taking out a stone, he hurled it with his sling and hit the Philistine in the forehead. The stone sank in, and Goliath stumbled and fell face down on the ground.

50 So David triumphed over the Philistine with only a sling and a stone, for he had no sword. 51 Then David ran over and pulled Goliath’s sword from its sheath.

David used it to kill him and cut off his head.

Do you see the confidence that David had?  But the confidence wasn’t in himself, it was in God.  David knew who he was and as a result of who he was, he knew that God would deliver him just like e did all those other times.

Your identity is linked to the confidence that you have in God.  Some are confident in their looks or their jobs…and otherworldly things, but our confidence comes from who we are in Christ.  My confidence comes from my identity in Christ.

Who I Am In Christ

Romans 8:16-17

16 For his Spirit joins with our spirit to affirm that we are God’s children. 17 And since we are his children, we are his heirs. In fact, together with Christ we are heirs of God’s glory. But if we are to share his glory, we must also share his suffering.

According to this scripture, we are children of God.  Think about it this way?  How much do you love your children? Wouldn’t you do anything for them?  I’m sure you have because you love them.  So, imagine what God would do for us since we are His children.  Won’t he take care of us, won’t he protect us, won’t he provide for us?

Matthew 7:9-11

“You parents—if your children ask for a loaf of bread, do you give them a stone instead? 10 Or if they ask for a fish, do you give them a snake? Of course not! 11 So if you sinful people know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give good gifts to those who ask him.

I think that verse is clear.

You need to see yourself as a child of God.  That is who you are!  You are God’s child.

Colossians 3:3-4

For you died to this life, and your real life is hidden with Christ in God. And when Christ, who is your life, is revealed to the whole world, you will share in all his glory.

How important we must be to God that he hid our life with Christ.  Jesus is God’s only begotten son, but we are adopted.

Ephesians 1:5-6

God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ. This is what he wanted to do, and it gave him great pleasure. So we praise God for the glorious grace he has poured out on us who belong to his dear Son.

What Does It Mean To Know Who You Are In Christ?

I think that everyone wants to identify with someone or with something because it makes us feel connected and like we belong. But we don’t want to identify with worldly things we need to identify with God.

If you know who you are as a child of God, then you know that there are benefits and rights that you have being the child of the almighty God.  You won’t live in defeat and below the level that God has planned for you.

If you know who are then you won’t take any of satans mess.  You will tell him where to go and remind him who you are and who your father is.  If we could just really grasp that we are children of God I think that it would change our entire outlook on life.

I say we to include myself because there are still some areas in my life where I need to recognize that I am a child of God and overcome that situation.  We can always use revelation from the Holy Spirit to help us in the situations that we face in life.

Who Does God Say I Am In The Bible?

Repeat this out loud, I am a child of God.  God is my Father.  Can you imagine, that I am a child of the creator of this world?  It’s hard to grasp that thought in your mind. That’s why we need to meditate on scriptures and study these scriptures so that the Holy Spirit can give us the revelation that we need.  Don’t identify with the negative situations in your life.

Don’t say…I am a… (insert negative comment here) say I am a child of God and because I am a child of God, I am healed, I am not poor, I am protected.  As you find your identity in Christ through the Bible, that is when you will realize that you are somebody and you were created for a purpose.

We need to see ourselves the way that our heavenly father sees us, we need to say what the Bible says about us.

Who I Am In Christ Affirmations

I am a new creature

I am free from sin

I am the righteousness of God

I am accepted

I am healed

So next time satan tries to mess with you, shut down those thoughts immediately and tell him who you are in Christ. Tell him what God sees when He looks at you!

What are your favorite verses that confirm your identity in Christ?  Put them in the comments, I love to hear from you.
