7 Bible Verses About Gratitude To God

Have you ever thought to yourself…what do I have to be thankful for?  We have all been there.  Life seems to get in the way, and you start to focus on all the negatives that are happening, focusing on all of the problems that you are facing.  That is the plan of the enemy, he wants you to become so consumed by life that you forget to give thanks to God.

It’s as simple as raising your hands and saying thank you God for all you have done, for all you are doing, and for all that you are going to do. You should study Bible verses about gratitude so that you can receive the revelation of why it’s important to give thanks to God. Don’t forget that there is always something going on in your life that you can be thankful for.

WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY ABOUT BEING GRATEFUL?

In 1 Thessalonians 5:18 NLT, it says be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus.

Being grateful is not dependent on what you have going on in your life.  In good or bad situations God still expects us all to give Him thanks because He is good all the time.  The situation may be bad, but that doesn’t change who God is.

DEFINITION OF THANKFULNESS IN THE BIBLE

According to the New Living Translation Study Bible, thankfulness is when you express gratitude and acknowledge God’s goodness.

Being thankful to God is usually expressed through praise and worship.  This is when you say, “thank you God for…” and you just appreciate Him for all He has done for you.  You tell Him how wonderful He is and how much you appreciate and love Him.

During my prayer time, I start with praise and worship I adore Him and thank Him for all the wonderful things that He has done for me in my life.  It is an intimate moment just between me and the Lord.

I also end with praise and worship by thanking Him in advance for answering my prayers.  God is so good we could never thank Him enough.

BIBLE STORIES ABOUT GRATITUDE

Many stories in the Bible show what it means to give thanks but let's start with David.  The entire book of Psalms is filled with praise, worship, and thanksgiving.

David knew how to worship God through any type of circumstance.  Whether being hunted by Saul or when he fled from his son Absalom.

David never stopped praising the Lord.  In Psalm 3:3-4 this is what David says while his life is in danger and He is hiding from Absalom, "But you, O Lord, are a shield around me; you are my glory, the one who holds my head high. I cried out to the Lord, and he answered me from his holy mountain."

In Luke 17:11-19 Jesus heals ten leopards, he sent them away to show themselves to the priest.  However, only one returned to give thanks and praise to the Lord, he fell at the feet of Jesus.  As a result, Jesus said to him that his faith has saved him.

Let’s talk about Hannah in Samuel 1.  She had been praying for a child, she was in such deep anguish that when Eli saw her, he thought that she was drunk.  When she explained her situation to Eli, he told her to go in peace, and may God give her what she was asking for.

Hannah had a son and named him Samuel.  When He was old enough, she brought him to Eli and said that because God answered her prayer and gave her a son she was giving the son back to the Lord.  What gratitude, now that is showing thanksgiving to God.

SCRIPTURES ON GRATITUDE

Ephesians 5:18-20 NLT

Don’t be drunk with wine, because that will ruin your life. Instead, be filled with the Holy Spirit, 19 singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves and making music to the Lord in your hearts. 20 And give thanks for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

I love this verse, it tells us what not to do and what we should do.  Sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs making music to the Lord.  When you feel down that is the perfect remedy.  You’re giving thanks to God for everything good in your life.

You are not thanking God for the problems, but you are showing Him despite what you are going through you are going to give Him thanks just because He deserves it.  He can build strength in you through those problems.  Remember that Romans 8:28 says that all things work out for our good.

Colossians 3:15 NLT

And let the peace that comes from Christ rule in your hearts. For as members of one body you are called to live in peace. And always be thankful.

You can’t depend on peace from the world, that isn’t real peace.  You must receive peace from Jesus and choose to allow His peace to dominate your heart.  Once you have peace from the Lord, that will allow for a thankful attitude, that is the power of thanksgiving to God.

You know that the peace that you have during a crazy situation could only be from Jesus, that alone makes you want to express your gratitude to God.

Colossians 2:7 NLT

Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness.

This verse is a key if you allow yourself to be fully rooted in the Lord and in His Word, the same way a plant draws nourishment from the soil you will draw from the Lord.  Your faith grows and through that, you will overflow with thankfulness because you know that you are connected to the one that has all of the answers for your life.

Psalm 7:17 NLT

I will thank the Lord because he is just; I will sing praise to the name of the Lord Most High.

David said that he will thank the Lord because He is just.  In a world that seems as if it operates upside-down sometimes, you see a lot of injustice.  But thank God that He is just and fair and He will fight on your behalf.

We just need to ask Him and turn it over to Him and then thank Him for His presence and His unfailing love.  You will no longer have to ask yourself why should I give thanks to God, it will be evident in your life.

Psalm 106:1 NLT

Praise the Lord! Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good! His faithful love endures forever.

David was known as a worshipper.  He always gave thanks and praise to God. This is the best way to express your gratitude to God.  If we stop and look at all the amazing things that God did in His Word, we would be astonished.  The wonderful thing is that those miracles weren’t only for those in the Bible that they apply to us as believers today as well.

We need to thank the Lord; He is a good father.  His love is not fleeting, and it doesn’t depend on our actions.  He loves us regardless.  When we praise and worship Him it shows that appreciate all that He has done for us, that is the importance of giving thanks to God.

Psalm 95:1-2 NLT

Come, let us sing to the Lord! Let us shout joyfully to the Rock of our salvation. Let us come to him with thanksgiving. Let us sing psalms of praise to him.

We should come to God with our requests, but we should also give Him praise and thanksgiving, they seem to go hand in hand.  It so important to give thanks to God, we should try to refrain from complaining as that never solves anything.

Think about it this way, when your child is appreciative of something that you have done for them doesn’t it make you want to continue to do nice things for them?  Why would God our Heavenly Father be any different towards us His children and that is one of the Benefits of giving thanks to God.

Philippians 4:6 NLT

Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need and thank him for all he has done.

Don’t worry, that seems impossible doesn’t it?  But it is possible if we do what Paul is telling us to do.  Whenever we feel like the worry is coming on turn it into a prayer, pray about what you need…then we can thank God for it and for what He has previously done for us.

Once you start to thank God for things that He has done for you in the past, you suddenly realize that since He did it before, He will do it again, that is the power of thanksgiving to God.

As you start to thank Him and praise Him, it uplifts your spirit your outlook of the situation begins to change as you express your gratitude to God.  We all need to add giving thanks to God as a part of our daily routine.  If you need a little help getting started, you could use the Scriptures as prayers of thanksgiving.

HOW CAN WE SHOW GRATITUDE?

There are many ways that we can show gratitude to God and those around us.  It is important that we give thanks to God, but it is also important to show thanks to our loved ones.

The simplest way to show gratitude would be to say thank you.  We sometimes take for granted the ones that are around us and we don’t realize it but a simple thank you can go a long way.

How about doing something nice for someone, like paying for their coffee or making a special breakfast for your family.  Showing gratitude doesn’t have to be an elaborate act that costs a lot of money, its just a thoughtful gesture.
